Reunion O’er Me

April 28, 2007

I seriously thought this weekend was going to let me down. After a few days of glorious sunshine on my return from Baltimore/DC, my first (mostly) free weekend in about a month was forecasted to be full of rain and gloom. However, for Saturday at least, the rain held off, and I had a great ride around Cambridge on the scooter. Hit up the mall, Harvard Square, and lastly, one of my favorite haunts, Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Turns out there’s a heck of a view from the top of the tower on the hill there. It comes highly recommended.

The reunion was great. There weren’t a ton of people there that I knew, but I saw a few familiar places, and got to spend some time with Aaron and Zoe, two of my favorite people, who I don’t see often enough. Turns out there’s lots of good food and drink in DC, but in a perverse way, the highlight was our expedition to the bar on the roof of the Hotel Washington. After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, we were seated overlooking the White House, where we played Spot the Sniper while waiting for our $14 mojitos to arrive. They were subpar. We ordered some hummus at the same time, just as a snack (and because it was the only appetizer they weren’t out of). About half an hour later, it hadn’t arrived, and we decided to leave. While we were getting the check, we got a last refill of our water. Mine had a bug in it. Not a small fly, but something more like an earwig. By then, we were just laughing.

Repeatedly Out Of Town

April 13, 2007

Headed out of town early as hell tomorrow morning to attend the Riverway Project Kallah. It was loads of fun last year, and is responsible in large part for introducing me to much of my current social group here in Boston. I expect great things this year, but I can’t help but feel a little twinge that I’ll apparently be missing the only decent scootering weather in Boston until the middle of next week. And that’s a best-case scenario.

For anyone who hasn’t been subjected to my incessant scooter-related ramblings for the past two weeks, let me tell you: Now that I’ve got it, I’ve been bitten by the scooter bug. I even ordered myself a copy of Quadrophenia to get up on the Mods’ scooter-centric lifestyle. There’s a whole two-wheeled world out there, and I’m just stepping into it.

Or will be, if it ever stops fucking raining.

(NB: John has a post about his sale of the scooter to me and its enabling of his new crack habit bicycle.)

As for the “Repeatedly” in the title, next weekend, I’m headed down to Charm City, hitting the ol’ Johnny Hop for my 5-year college reunion. I’ll be ripping up Bawlmer for a few days, hanging with Aaron, and then we’ll head down to DC for a bit to cause some trouble there. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.

I bet the scooting weather down south is great…stupid carryon weight limits.

What I Do At Work

Working

Actually, I feel that sums it up fairly well.

Sturm und Drek

April 6, 2007

I’m starting to think that I should add a “Weather” category for the blog. I never expected that it would become such a frequent post topic, but it seems to keep coming up.

That having been said, I’m about one more 35-degree day away from carrying a can of hair spray around with me everywhere I go to do my part to accelerate global warming. After the ludicrously warm winter we just had, I figured that April would be full of scooter-friendly gorgeousness. Instead, it’s barely hit 40 for a solid week. And it’s been raining.

I suspect a sinister anti-scooter plot by Big Oil.
